From the Mississippi River Marathon (2013).
Things didn't go well that day. Then again,
when do things ever go well in a marathon?
When I started this blog, I intended to post updates on my manuscript-in-progress, Bodies in Motion: A Religious History of Sports in America. But it quickly became a place for me to ramble about whatever is on my mind at a given moment. So posts cover everything from my experiments in teaching and writing, to distance running and my unhealthy relationship with college football.

While the topics are often random, I do try to abide by the title of the blog--to situate my words somewhere "between jest and earnest." Academics like myself tend to both over-emphasize how funny they are, while at the same time taking themselves WAY too seriously.

In this space, then, I try to find a balance between these two extremes. Am I successful? Of course not. But I might as well keep at it.
